Born on September 2, 1981, Jennifer Kate Hudson is one of the great American actresses and singers of her time. Having her initial rise to fame back in 2004, she would place seventh on the popular singing contest and television show, American Idol, season 3. Taking her career into acting, she would land the role of Effie White, starring in the 2006 film Dreamgirls, which would end up landing her a Golden Glove Award, Academy Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and a BAFTA Award as well. All of her awards were for the same category, Best Supporting Actress. She would go on to appear in several other highly anticipated movies, the likes of which included Sex and the City in 2008, The Secret Life of Bees in 2008, as well as the hit movie Black Nativity which was released in 2013. Not wanting to be a one trick pony, she would make her debut on Broadway, playing Shug Avery in the play, the Color Purple.
After she was eliminated from the American Idol competition and performing in the movie Dreamgirls, Jennifer would then go on and be signed by Clive Davis on Arista Records. Born in Chicago, Illinois on September 12, 1981, Jennifer Hudson is the third, as well as the youngest of three children that her parents, Darnell Donerson and Samuel Simpson. Being raised by her parents in Englewood, she would be brought up a Baptist, eventually attending Dunbar Vocational High School. Hudson would go on to graduate in 1999.
Hudson has gone on record to say that some of her biggest inspirations have been Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, and Whitney Houston, as well as her biggest influences. Always loving to be involved in music Hudson would get her first start early, at just the age of 7. This is when she would start to perform by volunteering to sing in her church choir, as well as occasionally partaking in the local community theater with help from her grandmother, Julia. Many years later, she would eventually enroll in at Langston University but would end up leaving after just one semester due to the problem that she was homesick, as well as unhappy with the weather. She would soon after register at Kennedy-King College instead.

While she has had huge success in her professional career, her personal life has not been as fortunate. Having started to date James Payton in 1999 at the age of just 18 years old, they would end up separating in the later part of 2007. Hudson would go on to meet David Otunga, a professional in wrestling that was part of the WWE and was a Harvard Law program graduate as well. The couple would soon after become engaged in 2008 and have their first child together the following year in 2009. Her first child, they would name hi David Daniel Otunga, Jr. Unfortunately, in November of 2017, Otunga and Hudson would end up splitting ways.
While everything seemed to be going great for Jennifer, she would eventually have a heart-breaking tragedy that she would have to deal with. On October 24, 2008, her mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason, were found murdered inside of their Chicago home. They were both shot to death and Hudson’s 7-year-old nephew, named Julian King, was also missing. Julian’s mother, Julia, would report that her son was missing and the authorities would release an AMBER Alert in order to find him. Just three days later, the FBI would confirm that they found a body of a young boy on the West Side of Chicago, which would be identified as her nephew, Julian. After an autopsy was completed, it was reported that he too suffered from multiple gunshot wounds.
While the entire situation is a terrible one that nobody should ever have to endure, justice would end up being served, as William Balfour would eventually be charged with the three murders. William Balfour was the estranged 27-year-old husband of Julia. He was charged with the three counts of first-degree murder, as well as one count of committing a home invasion. Fortunately, Balfour would be convicted of all seven of the counts that he was accused of, landing him three life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole. These sentences would need to be served consecutively, and then followed by another 120 years in prison for the rest of the convictions that he had received.
To celebrate their lives, Hudson’s family would go on to create The Hudson-King Foundation for Families of Slain Victims. Jennifer and her sister Julia would also go on to create another foundation called the Julian D. King Gift Foundation to honor Jennifer’s nephew. Their foundation goes out of its way to provide Christmas gifts and essential school supplies to the families in Chicago who are not necessarily able to afford them on their own.
