Ne-Yo, who was born Shaffer Chimere Smith on October 18, 1979, is one of the great American songwriters, singers, dancers, actors and record producers.  He was able to elevate himself to stardom when he wrote the song ‘Let Me Love You’ in 2004, for the then singer known as Mario. From the success of that particular song, Ne-Yo would soon find himself in a meeting with the head of the record label Def Jam.  This is actually the time when Ne-Yo was able to sign his very first recording contract.

Being released in 2005, Ne-Yo’s debut single, titled ‘Stay’, would see some moderate success.  The following year he would go on to release his first debut album, ‘In My Own Words’, which would go on to become both commercially successful, as well as critically successful.  It would even go on to reach the number one spot on the Billboard 200 charts within the United States. The album was so well received that it would even achieve platinum status in the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and the United States.  On that album, the hit single ‘So Sick’, would reach the top of the single charts on the Billboard Hot 100.

Ne-Yo’s next album, Because of You, which was released the next year in 2007, soon became the second number one selling album to go platinum, as well as debuting on the charts of the Billboard Top 200 and the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums.  It would also earn a Grammy Award for being the Best Contemporary R&B Album during that years Grammy Awards.

Following the success of his second studio album, Ne-Yo would go on to release a third studio album that would be titled Year of the Gentlemen in 2008.  AS with his first two studio albums, this one would also find much success, as well as more Grammy Award nominations for several categories, some of which included Album of the Year, as well as the Best Contemporary R&B Album.  Hosting singles that included ‘Miss Independent’ and ‘Closer’, those tracks would also go on to be nominated for Best R&B Song, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, and even the Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. As if all of the Grammy nominations weren’t enough, Year of the Gentlemen would go on to become certified platinum two times within the US, selling over two million copies across the United States.  The album would also go on to reach platinum status once in Japan, and then three times in the United Kingdom.

Releasing his fourth studio album in 2010, Libra Scale would reach the number one spot within the UK’s R&B Singles and Albums Charts, as well as the number nine spot in the US Billboard 200.  Unfortunately for Ne-Yo however, he would eventually see his sales decline with this particular album. Ready to bounce back in 2012, he would go on to release his fifth album that would be titled, R.E.D., and would put him right back into the spotlight.  This albums lead single, titled ‘Let Me Love you (Until You Learn to Love Yourself)’, would go on to be certified platinum within the US, selling more than two million copies. His next album, Non-Fiction, would be released a little later in 2015. He would follow that one up with another album, his seventh that was titled Good Man, and was released in June of 2018.  Besides his music, Ne-Yo has been busy being a judge for the hit television show World of Dance, judging alongside the likes of Jennifer Lopez and the famous Dancing With the Stars dancer, Derek Hough.

Ne-Yo’s Early Life

Ne0Yo, originally born in Arkansas in a town called Camden, was the son of an African American and Chinese father, and a African American mother.  Luckily for him, both his mother and father were musicians and the apple certainly didn’t fall far from the tree with this one. However, his mother and father would eventually separate, leaving him to be raised more by his mother.  Looking for more and better opportunities to provide for her family, his mother would eventually move them out to Las Vegas for the opportunity to give them a better life.

While he was still in school at the Las Vegas Academy, he would choose to go by his stage name, which at the time was GoGo, and join up with an R&B group that called themselves Envy.  This group would appear during the amateur night on the Showtime at the Apollo show, as well as MTV’s The Cut show. Then in the year 2000, the band would agree to disband and Ne-Yo would go on to write songs for other musicians before he would have his big break and start his solo career.  The name Ne-Yo, would actually be coined by the producer Beg D Evans, someone who Ne-Yo had previously worked with. He gave him that particular name because he would claim that Ne-Yo was able to see music the same way that Neo from the Matrix would see the matrix.

Ne-Yo’s Music Career

After his first music group decided that they were going to disband back in 2000, Columbia Records would go on and sign Ne-Yo, only to drop him before he was even able to release his debut album, which was actually already recorded.  Having planned to release the single ‘That Girl’, singer Marques Houston just so happened to have heard it. Houston liked the song so much that he would re-record the song and then releases it on his 2003 album that was titled MH, as one of its singles.  This is when Ne-Yo would catch a huge break, as the industry would finally start to recognize that Ne-Yo was one of the best songwriters around.

For over the next two years Ne-Yo would continue to write songs for other artists, some of which would never even be released.  However, since Ne-Yo was on top of the songwriting game, he would write songs for the likes of artists that include the boy band Youngstown, Christina Millan’s song ‘It’s About Time’, and Teedra Moses’s album, Complex Simplicity.  Unfortunately for Ne-Yo, none of these songs would do much for his career as they would never go on to receive any mainstream attention. Moving forwards however, Ne-Yo has also written songs for the likes of Faith Evans, Musiq, Mary J. Blige, and B2K.

When Ne-Yo wrote the song ‘Let Me Love You’ for the singer Mario, is when he was finally able to be recognized for his amazing talent.  This particular song would go on to reach the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and stay there for a total of nine weeks. After this song topped the charts, the then chairman of Def Jam Records would arrange a meeting with Ne-Yo where he would actually not be signed to the label.  However, Jay-Z, the CEO of Def Jam at the time, would sign him to a deal soon after when hew would perform in front of all the label’s executives.

After being signed to Def Jam, the rest is history.  With all of his studio albums elevating Ne-Yo’s status to superstar, he has released a ton of hit singles over the span of his career.  While it would be extremely difficult to narrow down all of his hits to just the top ten, which is exactly what has happened.
