A Mother's Crusade
Jacqueline Boatwright of Lithonia, GA, whose infant son was disabled after an accident at his day care center, successfully sued the center for damages–$33 million, but it had no liability insurance and she never received the money. To prevent other parents from suffering her fate, she crusaded the past six years for laws to require day care facilities to notify prospective customers if they don’t have insurance. Her efforts resulted in the recent passage of The Anthony DeJuan Boatwright Act that requires every state’s day care centers to disclose whether they have liability insurance.

The January 2009 Ebony selects America’s charismatic new chief executive as its first Person of the Year and chronicles his 21-month-long campaign journey to an unprecedented presidential victory. A highlight of the issue is the first print interview given by the incoming president since his election. In it he expresses his vision for America. “I believe in America’s institutions. I believe that whatever our history, that our better days are ahead of us. That gives me great confidence. We may be going through tough times right now, but I have no doubts that we will bounce back. And I hope that I can be an important part of that.”

Keyshia Cole Keeps It Real

Singer is unchanged by fame when it comes to her ‘family’s business’ and music

When it comes to family, R&B singer Keyshia Cole says her love is unconditional. That is exactly what gives her the solid foundation for the highly successful reality show, “Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is” on BET. “Watching my sister and mom grow makes me feel proud of them,” she tells JET magazine about her family’s progress.

Although Cole and the family keep it real and let it all hang out in the show’s third season, she hopes that her viewers will get something out of it as well. “I decided to do the reality show because there are young girls out there who are or were in my predicament, coming up the same way I had come up. I had them in mind when showcasing my family’s business,” she said.

WNBA Drops Comets

The WNBA’s Houston Comets apparently have lost their fire! The franchise that won the league’s first four championships is out of business. WNBA President Donna Orender explained the league couldn’t find new owners for the team and shut it down due to finances. “We didn’t have enough runway to get a deal done in time for the 2009 season,” she told the Associated Press. “So right now we have to move on.”
