Grand Theft Auto 4- 2008
With over 70 million units sold worldwide, Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is clearly the “granddaddy” of all video game franchises. Although the game is violent and some say glorifies criminal behavior, GTA is still a technical masterpiece.
Although I am willing to acknowledge the technical greatness of GTA, politically, I was never a huge fan of the franchise. Unfortunately, the game never game me a sense of accomplishment or purpose (sorry, GTA fans. I’m just being honest). However, Grand Theft Auto 4, perhaps the franchise’s greatest moment, was different. Unlike previous GTA games, this game had a journey that went beyond the violence. The storyline and character interaction was solid and unlike previous editions, the violence in GTA4 was simply the means to the end.
GTA4 also provides the deepest music soundtrack of any game or movie. The track list includes great music from artist like Gil Scott Heron, Mtume, Fela Kuti, Jill Scott, Kanye West and an equally impressive selection of rock, pop and jazz. Grand Theft Auto has forever changed how music is used in the world of gaming. It also introduced a new revenue platform for the music industry. So with a compelling story, great game play with solid character interaction and innovative use of music, GTA4 was a perspective changing experience. (Xbox 360 and PS3)
Rock Band- 2007
Rock Band allows up to four players to simulate the performance of popular rock songs by playing with controllers modeled after musical instruments. Up to three people can play the drum, lead guitar or bass parts to songs with the instrument controllers while a forth person sings the vocal part through a USB microphone. Players are scored on their ability to match scrolling musical notes while playing instruments or by their ability to match the singer's pitch on vocals. This is karaoke on steroids. And if you want to take your party to the next level, pick up the Rock Band lighting and fog kit. Party games will never be the same. (Xbox, PS3 and Wii)
Little Big Planet- 2008
Little Big Planet is the puzzle platformer that opened the door for user-generated content in gaming. Through a robust level and object editor, users are encouraged to create new levels of gaming content to play and share with others via the Internet. While the game play is simple, the creativity is well worth the price of admission. This is also a great game for parents. Not only does the game provide kid friendly fun but it also inspires creativity. (PS3)
